Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost to play a DBYAL sport?
DBYAL is available at no cost to all children 6-12 years old in Durham, NC.

How long is the baseball season?
We will begin practicing around the beginning of April 2024 and games will begin mid-to-late April. The season typically concludes on the third Saturday in June with our annual Family Fun Day and the 9-12 championship game.

Where will baseball games and practices be held?
Games for the 6-8 year old league are held on Saturday mornings, 9 - 10:30am and the 9-12 year old league plays on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6pm or 7:30pm. All games and most teams' practices will be held at Long Meadow Park in Durham. Please note the parking lot is at the corner of Liberty Street and N Hyde Park Avenue. There are two fields: Long Meadow Field (closest to the parking lot) and Scarborough Field. Other fields (Lyon Park, Lakeview, Walltown) may be used for practices.

What baseball equipment does my child need?
All players will need to have their own baseball glove. If you would like assistance with picking out the right size, please let us know. DBYAL will provide baseball pants, hats, and team t-shirts to be worn during games. We will have bats and helmets to share, but please bring your own bat/helmet if you have one.

Can all my kids play on the same baseball team?
Yes, if they are in the same age group. Unless a coach specifically requests a younger player be added to their team, we are unable to accommodate kids younger than six (turning six by May 1, 2024) in the 6-8 age group or kids younger than nine (turning nine by May 1, 2024) in the 9-12 age group. We understand this could be very inconvenient for families and wish we could accommodate every request.

If your child is 13 or older (before May 1) you can check out Long Ball which is designed for 13-18 year old boys.

Do you need additional baseball coaches or volunteers?
Yes! Please indicate if you are interested in coaching or volunteering as you are registering your child. You may also fill out the coaches' background check on the website and/or email DBYALNC@gmail.com.

When can I expect to hear from my child’s baseball coach about practices and games?
Coaches will email or call each parent/caregiver to introduce themselves by around the end of March 2024. Each of our volunteer coaches work hard to provide a great experience for your children, but they balance this commitment with their work, family responsibilities, etc. Please be patient as we work to divide players evenly onto their teams, coordinate practice and game schedules, and disseminate this information to coaches.
